Letter From Amisfield

Are we expecting a Viking raid?

By Teri Casiokola·AMISFIELD, 2nd March 2026

I saw some “stop the boats” stickers at a pedestrian crossing the other day near the river. I got a sudden pang of fear. Are the Vikings coming? Had someone decided to do Nithraid twice a year? Was there a pestilence ridden cruise ship anchored somewhere in the Solway?

Nope. turns out they were probably put there by some heid the baws who had done some fascism tourism due to the false kerfuffle over the lads in the mercure hotel on new abbey road. The boats in question are of course the inflatable boats crossing the English Channel, or La Manche as I shall call it here in the hope of giving a few gammons a heart attack.

Now, Dover is about 550kms away as the crow flies. But of these cunning boat folk are unlikely to drag their boat all the way to Dumfries overland so I reckon it’s about 1300kms if you squeeze through between the Scilly Isles and Cornwall.

I know it wasn’t a local fascist troll such as the computer fiddler, because they had put the sticker on a bit of the pole that neither pedestrians or motorists would see. Even local racists know how people cross the road.

In the end all the mouth-foaming was for no reason and they all scuttled off.

I might start my own sticker campaign. Watch this space.

Introducing DADA

Those nasty stop the boats stickers got me thinking, why not launch an art project of your own. So I have.

Behold the Doonhamer Art Department of Art.

There’ll be no Cabaret Voltaire, but look out for the occasional signed urinal
