Happy St Andrew’s day beloved pee-wits.
The Scottish Languages Act 2025 - legislation that officially recognises Gaelic and Scots as Scotland’s official languages - comes into effect today. The Bill was passed unanimously (well there’s a thing, eh) recognising Scots as an official language of Scotland and extending support for Gaelic.
I won’t be using my platform here to lobby for wider use of Amisfeldian. I choose to deliver my sermons primarily in English, but I respect the right of my fellow scrievers on The Doonhamer to lay down their thoughts in their language of choice. And today, at least in the parliamentary realm, it is recognised that their contributions here are in an official language.
While the new legislation focuses mainly on Gaelic, one could see that as priority being given to the area that needs most bolstering, because Scots, in all its forms is alive and well, surviving, reviving and thriving in so many ways.
Does this mean we’ll see the next version of Windows offer a Scots language option during set up? I doubt it, but maybe a starting point would be a less aggressive autocorrect rapping your knuckles like your grandparents’ teacher that beat the Scots out of them.
For now I’d settle for having the name of my country appear in a dropdown list when I’m filling in my address on an online form.
